A growing number of people online are identifying as “nebulasexual,” a term connected to neurodivergence and the way some individuals experience attraction. The label has recently gained attention across social media platforms, especially within LGBTQ+ communities discussing identity and mental health.

Nebulasexuality is generally described as a situation where someone finds it difficult or impossible to clearly determine whether they experience sexual attraction. This uncertainty is often linked to neurodivergence, intrusive thoughts, or differences in emotional processing.
The term falls under the broader “quoisexual” or “quoisexual” umbrella, which refers to people who struggle to define or separate different types of attraction.

Why the Name “Nebulasexual” Was Chosen
The word “nebula” comes from astronomy and refers to a cloud-like formation in space. Supporters of the label say the name reflects the “cloudy” or unclear feeling some people experience when trying to understand attraction.
Some definitions also compare the term to blurred vision, explaining that attraction can feel difficult to interpret or separate from other emotions like admiration, friendship, aesthetic appreciation, or romantic feelings.
People who identify as nebulasexual may still desire intimacy, relationships, or sexual experiences. The label is not necessarily about lacking attraction completely, but rather having difficulty identifying exactly what they feel.

Connection to Neurodivergence
Most explanations of nebulasexuality describe it as a label specifically associated with neurodivergent individuals, including some people with ADHD, autism, OCD, or intrusive thought disorders.
Supporters of the term say neurodivergence can affect how emotions, attraction, and relationships are processed. Some individuals report difficulty distinguishing between sexual attraction, romantic attraction, emotional attachment, or hyperfixation.
One Reddit user described the experience by saying attraction feels “cloudy and fuzzy,” while another explained they struggled to tell whether feelings were attraction or simply admiration and fascination.

How It Differs From Asexuality
Although nebulasexuality is often discussed within the asexual spectrum, experts and community members say it is different from being fully asexual.
Asexuality usually refers to experiencing little or no sexual attraction. Nebulasexuality, however, centers more on uncertainty or difficulty identifying attraction clearly.
Some people who identify as nebulasexual may also use other labels at the same time, while others prefer not to define their orientation more specifically.

Online Communities Have Helped Popularize the Term
The label first appeared online around 2014 and became more widely recognized after users on Tumblr and Reddit began discussing it more openly.
Over time, online communities created flags, symbols, and educational posts explaining the identity. One commonly used flag features green, white, and orange shades inspired by nebula imagery in space.
Supporters say these labels can help people feel understood and less isolated, especially if they struggled for years to explain their experiences. Critics, however, sometimes question whether increasingly specific labels are necessary.

Growing Conversations Around Identity
The rise of terms like nebulasexual reflects broader discussions about sexuality, neurodivergence, and personal identity online.
As conversations around mental health and LGBTQ+ experiences become more visible, many people are exploring language that better describes how they experience relationships and attraction. While not everyone understands or relates to these labels, supporters argue they provide comfort and validation for people who previously felt misunderstood.
