The station was packed with commuters when a man suddenly ripped a striped bag from a woman’s shoulder and pushed through the crowd.

Sienna saw everything.

She chased him toward the turnstiles, grabbed his shoulder and ordered him to return the bag. But instead of trying to escape, the man stopped and slowly turned toward her.

There was no panic in his eyes.

Only recognition.

He attacked without warning, driving Sienna backward toward the metal gates. The fight moved across the station and onto the staircase as terrified commuters scattered. Sienna blocked his blows, used the railing to break his balance and finally drove him onto the tiled floor.

When she displayed her badge, the man looked at it and smiled.

“You’re too late,” he whispered. “We already have what we came for.”

Sienna assumed he was talking about something inside the stolen bag. But when she opened it, she found no wallet, phone or personal belongings.

Instead, the bag contained surveillance photographs of Sienna entering the same station on different days. A subway map showed several locations circled in red—including the platform directly beneath the federal building where she worked.

Then Sienna noticed a tiny black device hidden inside the attacker’s jacket. Its green indicator was still flashing.

It wasn’t a tracker.

It was a short-range credential reader capable of copying the electronic signal from a nearby security badge. During the struggle, the device had remained only inches from the identification concealed beneath Sienna’s coat.

Someone had staged the theft to force physical contact with her.

Sienna immediately searched for the woman whose bag had supposedly been stolen, but she had disappeared. When transit officers reviewed the surveillance recording, they uncovered something even more disturbing.

The woman had never been robbed.

Seconds before the video began, she had deliberately loosened the strap and moved beside the attacker. Both had entered the station together—and neither had arrived on a train.

Before Sienna could alert her office, her phone vibrated.

A restricted evidence room across the city had just been opened using her credentials.

The access record identified the person who entered as:

SPECIAL AGENT SIENNA WILLIAMS.

That should have been impossible. Sienna was still standing inside the subway station, surrounded by witnesses.

A second notification appeared from an unknown number:

“Badge accepted. The red file is open.”

Sienna looked down at the captured man, but his smile had disappeared. He appeared frightened now.

“You don’t understand,” he said quietly. “I wasn’t supposed to steal the bag. I was supposed to keep you here.”

At that exact moment, the station lights flickered and every security camera above the turnstiles went dark.

Sienna had stopped the apparent thief—but somewhere across the city, another person was already moving through a federal building using her identity.

The robbery had never been the crime.

It was the distraction.
