A 21-year-old woman from Cambridgeshire, England, is preparing to have both of her legs amputated after spending years living with an extremely rare and devastating condition that caused her legs to lock in an upward position. The heartbreaking case has drawn widespread attention online after details of her long medical struggle were shared publicly.
Megan Dixon says she has endured nearly eight years of constant pain and severe disability after her health rapidly deteriorated during her teenage years. Her condition became so serious that her knees eventually bent backwards at a 45-degree angle, leaving doctors to conclude that amputation is now her only realistic option.
Health Problems Began at Age 13
According to Megan, her medical problems started when she was just 13 years old after suffering from whooping cough and glandular fever. Soon afterward, she began losing mobility in her legs and eventually became unable to walk altogether by the age of 14. Doctors initially diagnosed her with myalgic encephalomyelitis, often known as ME or chronic fatigue syndrome. However, her symptoms continued to worsen dramatically over time. She later began experiencing seizure-like episodes, loss of speech, paralysis, and even periods where she entered what she described as a “coma-like state.” Megan was eventually diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), a complex condition that affects how the brain sends and receives signals throughout the body. The disorder can cause severe physical symptoms even though scans and traditional medical tests may not always reveal obvious structural damage.

Legs Became Permanently Locked
Over the years, Megan’s condition became increasingly severe. She says her legs eventually locked completely straight and could not bend, even while she was under anesthesia during medical procedures. As the years passed, her knees started bending backwards due to irreversible joint damage. She described living with unbearable pain every day while struggling to complete even the simplest tasks. Because she cannot stand or walk independently, she often relies on a wheelchair or moves around by dragging herself across the floor. Megan also claims she repeatedly felt dismissed by medical professionals who questioned the seriousness of her pain and symptoms. According to her, years passed before surgeons were willing to intervene, and by then the damage to her knees had become permanent.
Doctors Say Amputation Is the Only Option
After consultations with specialists and amputee clinics, doctors reportedly informed Megan that double amputation offered the best chance of improving her quality of life and reducing her constant pain. The surgery is currently scheduled for August. Although the decision has been emotionally devastating, Megan says she hopes the operation will eventually allow her to regain some independence and mobility through the use of advanced prosthetics and an electric wheelchair. She is currently raising money online for specialist equipment and future rehabilitation costs. Despite everything she has endured, Megan has continued sharing her journey publicly on TikTok and social media in hopes of supporting others dealing with chronic illness and disability.

Message of Hope After Years of Struggle
Megan says one of the hardest parts of her journey has been accepting that amputation became necessary after so many years of suffering. Still, she continues encouraging others not to ignore serious symptoms or give up searching for medical answers. She recently became engaged to her partner and says she remains focused on building a future despite the enormous challenges ahead. Megan also hopes to eventually train as a nail technician once her health stabilizes after surgery. Her story has sparked emotional reactions online, with many people expressing sympathy, admiration, and frustration over how long she struggled before receiving the treatment she needed.
