A tourist accused of throwing a large rock at an endangered Hawaiian monk seal in Maui has officially been arrested following days of public outrage and viral videos circulating online. The incident shocked both locals and animal lovers across the internet, especially because the seal involved is considered a beloved symbol within the community.
Federal agents arrested 38-year-old Igor Mykhaylovych Lytvynchuk from Washington state after authorities reviewed footage showing a man hurling a rock toward the protected animal near Lahaina, Hawaii. Officials say the rock narrowly missed the seal’s head but caused the animal to panic and abruptly change its behavior.
Viral Video Sparked Immediate Outrage
The disturbing moment quickly spread across social media after witnesses recorded the encounter near the shoreline. According to reports, the monk seal involved is known locally as “Lani,” an endangered Hawaiian monk seal that has become a recognizable and emotional figure for Maui residents following the devastating 2023 wildfires. Witnesses claimed the tourist appeared unconcerned after being confronted. Several reports stated that he allegedly bragged about being wealthy enough to pay any fines that might result from the incident.
