After nearly two decades of transforming the lives of young women in South Africa, Oprah Winfrey has announced that her Leadership Academy for Girls will close its residential campus at the end of 2027. While the decision marks the end of one chapter, Winfrey says it is also the beginning of a broader mission that will allow her to support even more students through an expanded scholarship program.
The announcement surprised many supporters of the academy, which has become one of Oprah’s most celebrated philanthropic projects since opening in 2007. Since welcoming its first students in 2007, the academy has educated more than 1,000 girls from underprivileged backgrounds. Why the Academy Is Closing

By shifting to a scholarship-based approach, she says the foundation will be able to support approximately twice as many students as the academy currently serves. Instead of attending one campus, scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to study at high-quality schools throughout South Africa. The academy’s current students will not be affected by the transition. Those already enrolled will complete their education, while any remaining students after the closure will have their schooling fully funded until graduation.
Continuing the Mission
Although the physical campus will no longer operate as a boarding school after 2027, Oprah emphasized that her commitment to South African education remains as strong as ever. The academy’s facilities will transition to the Gauteng provincial government, ensuring the campus continues to serve educational purposes in the future. Meanwhile, the expanded scholarship initiative will focus on identifying academically gifted girls from disadvantaged communities and providing them with opportunities that might otherwise remain out of reach. Winfrey explained that the mission has always been larger than a single school. Her goal has been to invest in future female leaders capable of making meaningful contributions to their communities and the country as a whole.
