Mark Davidson Jacildo, a father from the Philippines, has spent much of his life adapting to an extremely rare condition that has dramatically affected the size of his hands. Born with macrodactyly, Mark’s hands have grown to around ten times their usual size, creating challenges in his everyday life while also making him the target of cruel comments from strangers online.
Despite the difficulties, Mark has built a loving relationship with his girlfriend, Jelai. The couple has spoken publicly about their relationship and the assumptions people make when they see them together.
Living With Extremely Large Hands
Macrodactyly is a rare condition in which one or more fingers or toes grow excessively. It can cause stiffness, pain and restricted movement, and medical treatment can be particularly complicated. In Mark’s case, his left hand weighs approximately seven kilograms, while his right weighs around two kilograms. Together, his hands weigh close to nine kilograms. He has described the sensation as being like carrying rocks in his hands. The condition has affected him since childhood. He remembers struggling with ordinary tasks at school, including tying his shoelaces, while activities such as preparing food can also be difficult. His unusual appearance has unfortunately attracted insensitive comments. Some people have compared him to the Incredible Hulk, while others have made assumptions about what he can and cannot do.
How Mark Met His Girlfriend
Mark met Jelai on Facebook approximately four years ago. Their relationship developed despite the unusual circumstances surrounding his appearance. Jelai admitted that she initially wondered whether photographs of Mark had been digitally edited. His hands appeared so unusual that she was unsure whether the images were genuine. However, her doubts quickly disappeared when they got to know each other. She explained that she found Mark attractive and that she was with him because she genuinely loved him. Mark said that one of the things he appreciated most was that Jelai did not immediately focus on his condition. Instead of questioning him about his hands, she treated him as a person. That attitude became an important part of their relationship.
The Assumption That Upsets Him Most
The couple regularly encounters comments from strangers who believe Jelai must have another reason for being with Mark. One common assumption is that she is interested in him because of money.
Mark has a simple response to that theory: he says he does not actually have much money. But there is another assumption that affects him far more deeply. Some people believe his physical condition prevents him from being a good father or supporting his family. Mark strongly rejects that idea. He explained that strangers sometimes assume Jelai must act as his full-time caregiver because of his hands. They imagine that she has to dress him, feed him and take care of his basic needs.
According to Mark, that is simply not the reality.
He Takes Care of His Family
Mark says he is capable of handling most aspects of his daily life himself. He has adapted to his condition and developed his own ways of completing tasks that might be difficult for other people. In fact, Jelai’s assistance is reportedly limited to small things, such as helping him put in his earrings. Mark emphasized that he is the person who takes care of his family rather than someone who constantly needs to be cared for. His determination has helped him maintain a positive outlook despite the difficulties he faces.
“I always have a positive mindset,” he explained. “I can’t do anything about my hands. It is what it is.”
Jelai Sees the Person, Not the Condition
Jelai has also spoken about her admiration for Mark’s attitude. She said she loves the way he handles himself despite knowing that he has a condition that makes everyday life more complicated. For her, his physical appearance does not define his role as a partner or father. She values the way he continues to work, provide for his family and look after the people he loves. Their relationship challenges the assumptions strangers sometimes make based solely on appearance.
Treatment Can Be Complicated
Medical treatment for macrodactyly can be challenging. Because excessive growth can involve bones, nerves, blood vessels and soft tissue, surgery may require complex procedures. Repeated operations may sometimes be necessary, and recurrence can remain a concern. Mark, however, has learned to live with his condition rather than allowing it to define his identity.
“Just a Normal Guy”
Despite everything that makes him visually different, Mark does not see himself as fundamentally different from other fathers. He describes himself simply as a dad who works, provides for his family, spends time with friends and tries to live an ordinary life. His story is ultimately less about the extraordinary size of his hands and more about resilience, family and refusing to allow strangers’ assumptions to determine his identity. For Mark and Jelai, their relationship is based on affection and mutual respect—not on appearances, money or the expectations of people watching from the outside.
