As temperatures continue to rise during summer heatwaves, millions of people rely on electric fans to make sleeping easier at night. While the cool airflow can feel like a lifesaver in a stuffy bedroom, sleep experts are now warning that leaving a fan running all night may actually do more harm than good.

Health professionals say that although fans can help people fall asleep faster, continuous airflow throughout the night can negatively affect sleep quality, hydration, breathing, and even muscle comfort.

How Fans Can Disrupt Sleep
According to sleep specialists, the body naturally changes temperature while sleeping. A cooler room can help signal the brain that it is time to fall asleep, but the body also needs to gradually warm slightly toward the morning to support a healthy waking cycle. Experts explain that keeping a fan blowing for the entire night may interfere with this natural process. Constant airflow can cool the body too much during the early morning hours, leading to lighter sleep, frequent waking, and discomfort. Some people may not realize the fan is affecting them until they wake up feeling unusually tired, stiff, or dehydrated. Sleep therapist Natalie Pennicotte-Collier said that while fans can help with sleep onset, they may eventually “fragment” sleep later in the night as the body struggles to regulate temperature naturally.

Dry Air And Breathing Problems
Another concern involves dry airways. Fans continuously circulate air around the room, which can dry out the nose, throat, and mouth over several hours.

Doctors say this dryness can irritate sensitive airways and cause symptoms such as:

Dry throat
Stuffy nose
Morning coughing
Hoarse voice
Sinus irritation

Medical experts also warn that fans may spread dust, pollen, and allergens around the bedroom, which can make allergies or asthma symptoms worse for some people. For people already struggling with seasonal allergies, the constant movement of air may increase nighttime irritation and lead to poor sleep quality.

Muscle Pain And Stiffness
Some physicians say direct airflow aimed at the body for several hours can also contribute to muscle stiffness and tension. Cool air blowing constantly onto muscles and joints may cause the body to tighten as a protective response. As a result, some people wake up with neck pain, shoulder stiffness, or aching muscles after sleeping with a fan pointed directly at them. While this effect may not happen to everyone, experts say it is common enough to be worth considering, especially during extended heatwaves when fans are used nightly.

Safer Ways To Stay Cool
Experts are not suggesting people completely avoid fans during hot weather. Instead, they recommend using them more carefully. One of the most common suggestions is using a timer so the fan automatically switches off after 60 to 90 minutes, once the person has fallen asleep.

Other helpful tips include:

Pointing the fan away from the bed instead of directly at the body
Keeping a glass of water nearby to stay hydrated
Using lightweight cotton bedding
Closing curtains during the day to block heat
Taking a lukewarm shower before bed
Opening windows during cooler evening hours

Sleep experts also recommend breathable sleepwear instead of sleeping naked, as certain fabrics can help absorb sweat and regulate body temperature more effectively.

Finding The Right Balance
During a heatwave, getting comfortable sleep can be difficult, and fans often feel essential. However, specialists say balance is important. Using a fan for part of the night may help cool the room without causing the dryness, irritation, or sleep disruption linked to constant overnight airflow. For many people, small adjustments to how the fan is used could make a major difference in sleep quality and overall comfort during extremely hot nights.
