Few people can imagine finding themselves inside the mouth of one of the ocean’s largest creatures, but that is exactly what happened to Massachusetts lobster diver Michael Packard during a routine day at sea. His extraordinary survival story quickly became one of the most unbelievable marine encounters ever reported.

Packard was working underwater when a massive humpback whale suddenly appeared and pulled him into its mouth. For a brief moment, the experienced diver believed he had been attacked by a shark. However, he soon realized he was trapped inside something much larger and far more unusual—a whale. The terrifying event lasted only a short time, but the memory would stay with him forever.

Trapped Inside the Whale
While diving for lobsters off the coast of Cape Cod, Packard was suddenly surrounded by darkness. He could not see what had happened and initially feared the worst. As he felt movement around him, he realized he was not being crushed by teeth or suffering an attack. Instead, he was inside the mouth of a humpback whale. Humpback whales are enormous animals that can grow more than 40 feet long and weigh many tons. Despite their size, they are not predators that hunt humans. They are filter feeders, meaning they consume small creatures such as krill and fish by taking in large amounts of water and filtering out their food. Experts believe the whale likely mistook Packard for prey while feeding and accidentally scooped him up along with the surrounding water.

A Terrifying Few Moments
Inside the whale’s mouth, Packard tried to remain calm while realizing he had very limited options. He was wearing diving equipment, which helped him continue breathing, but he was unsure how long he would remain trapped. The diver later explained that he feared he might not survive the situation. He thought about his family and wondered if he would ever see them again. After being inside the whale for roughly half a minute, the humpback whale surfaced and began shaking its head. The unusual sensation may have caused the whale to realize something was wrong. The animal then opened its mouth and released Packard back into the ocean. Remarkably, the diver escaped with only minor injuries.

A Rare Marine Incident
Marine experts described the encounter as extremely unusual. Humpback whales are generally considered gentle giants and are not known to intentionally harm humans. Although they can accidentally come into contact with boats or swimmers, cases involving a person entering a whale’s mouth are exceptionally rare. Experts explained that a humpback whale’s throat is not large enough to swallow a human. While the animal could temporarily hold a person in its mouth, swallowing would not be physically possible. The incident became a reminder of the unpredictable nature of working in the ocean, where even experienced professionals can encounter unexpected situations.

Returning to Life After the Experience
Despite the frightening encounter, Packard continued to share his story with others and returned to the activities he loves. As a lifelong fisherman and diver, he understood that the ocean carries both beauty and risks. The experience changed his perspective and gave him a renewed appreciation for life. He described the moment as something that made him think deeply about family, survival, and the incredible power of nature. Packard’s story remains one of the most extraordinary examples of human survival and serves as a reminder that the ocean still holds many mysteries. Even those who spend their lives exploring its depths can experience moments they never could have imagined.
