The beach is famous among Harry Potter fans because it was used as the filming location for Dobby’s death and burial scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Although Dobby is a fictional character, the location has developed into a genuine memorial site visited by thousands of fans.
Dobby’s Memorial Became a Tourist Attraction
Dobby was one of the most beloved characters in the Harry Potter story. The house elf originally served the Malfoy family but eventually became free after receiving a piece of clothing from Harry. After Dobby dies while helping Harry and his friends escape, Harry personally buries him. The emotional scene made the character’s death one of the most memorable moments in the series. Freshwater West subsequently became a pilgrimage destination for fans. Visitors created a makeshift memorial using stones, with one particularly recognizable rock carrying a message honoring Dobby as a free elf. The controversy began after project manager Simon Ludlam appeared in a BBC Wales interview discussing the planned route of the Greenlink project. According to Ludlam, the company was subsequently inundated with hundreds of calls from concerned fans. At first, the project manager admitted that he did not understand why people were so upset. His colleagues eventually explained the situation and made it clear that the complaints needed to be taken seriously.

Eventually, they found an alternative route that would prevent the cable from passing through Dobby’s memorial. The decision delighted Harry Potter fans, who had feared that construction work could disturb or destroy the site. Ludlam later acknowledged that many people were extremely happy with the outcome and jokingly suggested that Dobby was happy too. The decision is particularly unusual because the Greenlink project is a major piece of infrastructure rather than a small local development. The cable cost approximately £430 million, or more than $580 million, to construct.

Despite the unusual controversy surrounding its route, Greenlink serves a serious practical purpose. The approximately 125-mile connection links Ireland’s electricity network with Britain’s National Grid. The project has been operational since 2025 and is capable of supplying electricity to as many as 380,000 homes. The cable therefore represents an important piece of energy infrastructure, making the decision to modify its route even more remarkable. Yet planners ultimately determined that protecting the fan-created memorial was possible without preventing the wider project from moving forward.
