Thalles Winner DeSouza has achieved a remarkable milestone that few could have imagined when he first arrived in the United States. After surviving a terrifying shooting in Brazil, moving to America without speaking English and working at Wendy’s, the 23-year-old is now preparing to begin his studies at Yale University on a full scholarship. His journey is one of determination, resilience and the extraordinary impact that a few people believing in someone can have.
A Difficult Childhood in Brazil
DeSouza grew up in Vila Kennedy, a community in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where violence was part of everyday life. Raised by a single mother alongside his siblings, his childhood was shaped by difficult circumstances. In 2016, when DeSouza was just a teenager, his life changed dramatically. He survived a shooting inside his home while he was sleeping. The terrifying experience prompted his mother to make an enormous decision. She left Brazil and moved with him to the United States in the hope of creating a safer future for her family. When DeSouza arrived in America, he could not speak English. He had to learn a completely new language while adapting to an unfamiliar country and education system.
Starting Over at Wendy’s
As a teenager, DeSouza found work at a Wendy’s restaurant on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He worked hard and eventually became a shift manager while still in high school. Although the job provided valuable experience, DeSouza eventually considered leaving the restaurant industry. He wanted to work in construction because he believed it would allow him to earn more money and save for college. Instead, his managers encouraged him to stay and offered him an opportunity that would change the direction of his life. Usama El-Sehrawey and the late Ernest Smily decided to help fund DeSouza’s education. They began setting aside money based on the hours he worked, eventually providing enough financial support to cover several years of community college. For DeSouza, the gesture meant far more than financial assistance.
Education Became His New Opportunity
With the support of his employers, DeSouza enrolled at Cape Cod Community College. He quickly demonstrated that he was determined to make the most of the opportunity. He earned excellent grades, became involved in campus activities and eventually served as student body president. He also helped establish a religious club at the college. After three years at Cape Cod Community College, DeSouza transferred to Bunker Hill Community College, where he continued to build an impressive academic record. His achievements eventually gave him the confidence to apply to one of America’s most prestigious universities.
A Dream Becomes Reality
In May, DeSouza received the news that he had been accepted into Yale University. The moment was especially meaningful because Yale admits only a small percentage of transfer applicants, making his achievement even more impressive. He will begin his studies in the fall and plans to major in political science with a minor in human rights. He also intends to follow a pre-law track because his long-term goal is to attend law school and become a lawyer. His acceptance came with a full scholarship valued at more than $194,500, removing a major financial obstacle as he begins this new chapter.
Remembering Those Who Believed in Him
Despite his success, DeSouza has made it clear that he has not forgotten the people who helped him along the way. He has expressed deep gratitude toward his former Wendy’s bosses and the Smily family for seeing potential in him when he was still a young employee trying to figure out his future. Their support gave him more than money for tuition. It gave him the confidence to believe that higher education was possible. DeSouza’s story is ultimately about far more than getting into Yale. It is about overcoming fear, language barriers, financial challenges and an extremely difficult childhood. His journey demonstrates how perseverance and opportunity can completely change a person’s future. From arriving in America without knowing English to preparing to study at Yale, DeSouza has turned circumstances that could have limited his future into motivation to keep moving forward.
