Tensions surrounding Greenland have taken another turn after an American oil company connected to Donald Trump’s political circle began preparing for drilling operations without receiving all the necessary approvals from Greenlandic authorities. Greenland Energy, a Texas-based company established last year, is planning to explore for oil in the remote Jameson Land region of eastern Greenland. The company has suggested that the area could contain an enormous amount of crude oil, potentially worth as much as $1 trillion.
However, the project has already caused concern among Greenlandic officials after drilling equipment was transported to the territory before the company had obtained the required authorization. Nevertheless, the timing has inevitably attracted scrutiny. Trump continues to promote the strategic importance of Greenland while an American company connected to his political orbit is attempting to develop its natural resources.
