Ellen DeGeneres has opened up about a series of health struggles that shocked many fans after she stepped back from public life. The former talk show host and comedian revealed that she has been dealing with what she described as a “triple diagnosis,” sharing the news during her Netflix special For Your Approval, which premiered in September 2024. In the candid special, DeGeneres spoke openly about aging, pain, mental health, and the personal challenges she faced after leaving daytime television behind.

The Three Diagnoses She Shared
During the special, DeGeneres said she had been diagnosed with osteoporosis, OCD, and ADHD. She explained that the first diagnosis came after a bone density test, which revealed she had what she called “full-on osteoporosis.” She joked about the condition in her usual comedic style, saying she felt like a “human sandcastle,” but the reality behind the humor was serious. Osteoporosis can make bones weaker and more fragile, which increases the risk of fractures as people age. She also revealed that a therapist suggested she may have obsessive-compulsive disorder, which led her to realize that many of her long-standing habits and behaviors could be connected to OCD. In addition, DeGeneres said she has ADHD — though she referred to it as ADD during the special — and admitted that focusing on tasks can be extremely difficult for her. She used humor to describe how the combination of OCD and ADHD can feel contradictory, saying she obsesses over things but often can’t stay focused on them long enough to follow through.

Pain, Aging, and A Difficult Realization
DeGeneres also shared that she experienced “excruciating pain” and initially thought she had torn a ligament. After getting an MRI, she said doctors told her it was actually arthritis, which added another difficult reality to her experience of getting older. Although the main headline focused on the three diagnoses, she made it clear that aging itself has brought several physical changes and unexpected health concerns. In the special, she admitted that it’s difficult to talk honestly about aging while still trying to appear cool or carefree in the public eye. That honesty struck a chord with many viewers, especially because DeGeneres has long been known for presenting a polished, upbeat image on television.

Why She Sought Therapy
Another major part of her story involved the emotional fallout from the toxic workplace allegations that surrounded The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2020. DeGeneres said she sought therapy while trying to cope with the intense backlash and negativity that followed. It was during those therapy sessions that the possible OCD diagnosis came up. She also reflected on growing up in Christian Science, saying mental health conditions and illnesses simply were not openly discussed in her household. She even looked back on her father’s behavior and said she now believes he likely had undiagnosed OCD, recalling that he repeatedly checked doorknobs, faucets, and appliances before leaving the house.

A Candid Look at Life After Fame
DeGeneres’ reveal has drawn attention not just because of the diagnoses themselves, but because of how openly she discussed them after years in the spotlight. For many fans, the special offered a more vulnerable side of the star — one that mixed humor with honesty about health, aging, and life after fame. And while she made plenty of jokes, the message was clear: even the most familiar faces can be dealing with far more behind the scenes than anyone realizes.
