The Academy Awards may be the most glamorous night in Hollywood, but not everyone is welcome on the red carpet. Over the years, only a handful of celebrities have been officially banned, suspended, or expelled from the Oscars after behavior the Academy deemed unacceptable. From shocking onstage violence to criminal convictions and major scandals, these stars found themselves permanently or temporarily shut out of one of the film industry’s biggest events. UNILAD’s March 14 article says there are currently six famous names on the list heading into the 98th Academy Awards.

Will Smith’s Shocking Oscars Slap
Perhaps the most famous modern case is Will Smith. During the 2022 Oscars, Smith walked on stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. The moment instantly became one of the most infamous incidents in Academy Awards history. The Academy later announced that Smith would be banned from attending all Academy events, including the Oscars, for 10 years, starting April 8, 2022. While he kept the Best Actor Oscar he won that night, he cannot attend the ceremony in person or virtually during the ban period.

Bill Cosby and Roman Polanski Were Expelled
Bill Cosby and Roman Polanski were both expelled from the Academy in 2018 after the organization tightened its standards of conduct. Cosby was removed after his sexual assault conviction involving Andrea Constand, although that conviction was later overturned in 2021. Even after the legal reversal, the Academy did not reinstate him. Polanski, meanwhile, was expelled decades after his 1977 case involving unlawful sex with a minor. He had pleaded guilty before fleeing the United States and remains one of the most controversial Oscar winners ever.

Harvey Weinstein’s Fall From Power
Few Hollywood downfalls have been as dramatic as that of Harvey Weinstein. Once one of the most powerful producers in the movie business, Weinstein was expelled from the Academy in 2017 after numerous women accused him of sexual misconduct. The Academy described his conduct in extraordinarily harsh terms, saying his actions were incompatible with the standards it expected from members. Although some of Weinstein’s convictions have since faced legal reversals or retrials, he remains one of the most notorious figures ever removed from Oscar circles.

The Lesser-Known Names on the List
Not every banned celebrity is a household name. Carmine Caridi was the first person ever expelled from the Academy after he was caught distributing Oscar screener tapes that later ended up being pirated online. His expulsion became a major scandal at the time and set a precedent for future disciplinary action. Another lesser-known case is cinematographer Adam Kimmel, who was removed in 2021 after it was revealed he was a registered sex offender. According to reporting, his past had not been properly disclosed during the Academy membership process, leading to his removal once the information became public.

Why These Bans Still Matter
For an institution built on prestige, the Academy’s bans send a clear message: fame and awards do not place anyone above accountability. Whether the reason was public violence, piracy, or criminal misconduct, each case became a warning that even Oscar winners and major Hollywood names can be shut out of the industry’s biggest night. And with only six names currently on the list, being banned from the Oscars remains one of the rarest — and most humiliating — punishments in entertainment.
