In the realm of air travel, comfort often takes precedence when choosing attire for a flight. However, aviation safety expert Christine Negroni urges passengers to reconsider their wardrobe choices, specifically advising against wearing leggings during flights due to potential safety hazards.
Leggings, a staple in many travelers’ wardrobes for their comfort and flexibility, may pose significant risks in emergency situations. Negroni highlights that most leggings are made from synthetic materials like polyester and nylon. In the unfortunate event of a fire, these materials can melt and adhere to the skin, causing severe burns or even fatal injuries.
“Everyone is wearing yoga pants on planes now, but I avoid all artificial fibers because they are more likely to burn and stick to you if there is a fire,” Negroni explained.
To mitigate these risks, Negroni recommends wearing clothing made from natural fibers such as cotton, wool, or leather. These materials are less likely to ignite or melt, providing better protection in emergencies.
Beyond clothing, Negroni emphasizes the importance of appropriate footwear during flights. She advises passengers to keep their shoes on, especially during takeoff and landing, as emergencies may require quick evacuation. The aircraft floor could be extremely hot, cold, or covered in hazardous materials like oil or debris.
High heels, flip-flops, or any footwear that can hinder swift movement should be avoided. Instead, opt for sturdy, closed-toe shoes that can protect your feet and facilitate rapid evacuation if necessary.
Flight attendants and other aviation experts echo Negroni’s concerns. Andrea Fischbach, an American Airlines flight attendant, warns against wearing tight clothing, including leggings, as they can restrict blood flow and increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) during long flights.
Moreover, shorts and skirts are discouraged due to hygiene concerns, as airplane seats may not always be clean. Covering your skin can provide an additional layer of protection against potential contaminants.
While comfort is essential during air travel, safety should never be compromised. Choosing attire made from natural fibers and wearing appropriate footwear can significantly enhance your safety in the rare event of an in-flight emergency. By prioritizing safety over style, passengers can ensure a more secure and comfortable flying experience.
