A British woman who was born without a womb is now 26 weeks pregnant after receiving an extraordinary gift from her sister: a uterus transplant. Lauren Fowler was born with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome, commonly known as MRKH, a rare congenital condition that can cause women to be born without a uterus. Lauren has Type 1 MRKH, meaning she has normally functioning ovaries but was born without a uterus and cervix.

For Lauren, the diagnosis meant that although she had always dreamed of becoming a mother, she could not carry a pregnancy herself. Her journey toward motherhood eventually led her to a pioneering transplant program and, most importantly, to her sister Kelly.

An 11-Hour Operation
Lauren first learned about the possibility of uterus transplantation more than a decade ago. At the time, clinical trials were primarily exploring transplants involving deceased donors. Years later, she discovered that researchers were considering living donors. She immediately contacted her sister. Kelly, who already has three children, told Lauren that she would be willing to donate her uterus once she had finished building her own family. That promise eventually became reality. In May 2025, the sisters underwent an extremely complex operation. The transplant surgery lasted approximately 11 hours, with Kelly donating her uterus to Lauren. Although the initial procedure went well and Lauren was discharged after about a week, serious complications later developed. She required two additional surgeries because of an obstruction. Lauren has described that period as extremely difficult, saying that at one point the situation was uncertain. Despite those complications, her body did not reject the transplanted uterus.

Pregnancy Finally Became Possible
After recovering from the transplant, Lauren’s medical team monitored the new uterus carefully. Uterus-transplant recipients require close medical supervision because rejection and other complications can occur. Once the transplanted organ is functioning properly, doctors can use an embryo created through fertility treatment to establish a pregnancy. Pregnancy following a uterus transplant is considered high-risk and requires specialist monitoring. Lauren eventually became pregnant and is now 26 weeks along. Her baby is expected to arrive in October, with doctors planning a Caesarean delivery. The pregnancy followed an earlier miscarriage, making the current milestone particularly emotional for Lauren and her family.

A Special Connection for the Family
Kelly has spoken about how extraordinary it feels knowing that the womb that once carried her own children is now helping her sister carry a baby. Her three children are reportedly excited to meet their cousin, creating an unusual family connection that the sisters describe as deeply meaningful. Kelly has also said that the experience has brought the sisters even closer. Although they were already close before the transplant, going through such a major medical journey together has strengthened their relationship. For Lauren, the experience is about more than her own pregnancy. She hopes that by publicly sharing her story, she can give hope to young women who are diagnosed with MRKH and may believe that biological motherhood is impossible for them.

A Medical Breakthrough Offering Hope
Uterus transplantation remains a highly specialized and relatively rare procedure, but successful pregnancies and births have demonstrated that it can provide another pathway to motherhood for women who cannot carry pregnancies because they were born without a uterus or lost it because of illness. In the UK, other groundbreaking cases have already demonstrated the potential of the procedure. In 2025, Grace Davidson became the first woman in the country to give birth after receiving a womb donated by her sister. Lauren’s story adds another remarkable chapter to this rapidly developing field of medicine. After years of believing motherhood might never be possible, she is now preparing to meet her baby. For two sisters who chose to face an extraordinary medical challenge together, the transplant has transformed not only Lauren’s future, but the entire family’s understanding of what may be possible.
