Australian conservationist Robert Irwin recently revealed a terrifying encounter with a massive crocodile that nearly turned disastrous. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the 22-year-old explained how he was “death-rolled” by a 14-foot crocodile while conducting wildlife conservation work in Australia.
The crocodile involved in the incident was ironically named after host Jimmy Fallon himself. According to Irwin, he named the reptile years ago when it was still small, but the animal has since grown into what experts call a “boss croc” — a huge and extremely powerful saltwater crocodile.
The Dangerous Moment
While speaking on the show, Irwin described how researchers monitor crocodiles in the wild to help conservation efforts. He explained that the method, originally developed by his late father Steve Irwin, involves physically jumping onto the crocodile to restrain it safely for research purposes. However, things quickly went wrong during one encounter with the giant reptile. Irwin said that after jumping onto the crocodile’s back, the animal suddenly performed a violent “death roll,” a spinning maneuver crocodiles use to overpower prey. The massive reptile rolled over him, trapping him underneath hundreds of pounds of muscle and force. According to Irwin, he found himself pinned beneath the crocodile with one arm hanging out while the animal twisted violently. Fortunately, the crocodile rolled back in the opposite direction moments later, allowing him to escape unharmed.

What Is a Crocodile “Death Roll”?
A crocodile death roll is one of the reptile’s most dangerous attack techniques. When crocodiles grab prey that is too large to swallow whole, they clamp down with their jaws and rapidly spin their bodies in the water. The movement helps them tear flesh, break bones, and disorient victims. Experts explain that crocodiles use the maneuver because they cannot chew food like mammals. Instead, they rely on extreme force and rotation to rip prey into manageable pieces. The attack is considered especially deadly underwater, where victims can quickly become disoriented or drown. A viral CGI simulation shared online after Irwin’s interview demonstrated how devastating the technique can be. The animation showed how crocodiles use their muscular tails and spinning motion to overpower prey within seconds.
Continuing Steve Irwin’s Legacy
Robert Irwin has spent much of his life continuing the conservation mission started by his father, Steve Irwin, who became world famous through The Crocodile Hunter. Steve died in 2006 after suffering a fatal stingray injury while filming a documentary near the Great Barrier Reef. Despite the risks involved in wildlife conservation, Robert has continued working closely with dangerous animals at Australia Zoo alongside his family. Over the years, he has become known for his fearless animal encounters, photography work, and television appearances. Recently, Irwin’s popularity has grown even further following television projects, conservation campaigns, and public appearances in the United States. He also won the 2025 season of Dancing with the Stars, introducing him to an even wider audience.

Fans React Online
After clips from the interview spread online, many fans praised Irwin’s bravery while others questioned how dangerous the conservation methods can be. Social media users compared him to his father, noting the similarities in personality, enthusiasm, and willingness to work closely with wild animals. Many viewers also expressed relief that the encounter did not end tragically. Considering the size and strength of the crocodile involved, wildlife experts say the situation could easily have become fatal.
