In the early 1990s, Jo Ann Ussery, a resourceful woman from Benoit, Mississippi, faced a life-altering challenge when her home was destroyed. With limited financial resources and a family to support, she sought an affordable yet spacious housing solution. Traditional options like mobile homes or trailers seemed inadequate for her needs. It was then that her brother-in-law, an air traffic controller, proposed an unconventional idea: converting a decommissioned airplane into a residence.

Intrigued by the suggestion, Ussery explored the possibility and discovered a retired Boeing 727 airliner destined for the scrapyard. Recognizing its potential, she purchased the aircraft for approximately $2,000, excluding transportation costs. The plane was relocated to her property in Benoit, where it was strategically positioned with its nose extending over a lake, creating the illusion of mid-flight. The tail was securely anchored with concrete to ensure stability.

Over the course of six months, Ussery embarked on an ambitious renovation project, transforming the aircraft into a fully functional home. The interior, spanning over 1,500 square feet, was meticulously redesigned to include three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a laundry area, and a bathroom. Notably, the cockpit was converted into a luxurious master bathroom featuring a hot tub with panoramic views of the lake. Original elements such as the overhead compartments and the airplane lavatory were preserved, providing both functionality and a unique aesthetic.

To enhance comfort, Ussery installed insulation, flooring, and an air conditioning system. The aircraft’s inherent airtight design contributed to energy efficiency, maintaining warmth during colder months. The entrance was ingeniously modified; the rear staircase was adapted to function with a garage door opener, facilitating easy access. The project, completed in 1994, totaled around $50,000, a cost-effective alternative to conventional housing.

Ussery affectionately named her unique abode “Little Trump,” inspired by former President Donald Trump’s private jet. She resided in the airplane home with her family from 1995 to 1999, during which time it garnered attention for its innovative design and sustainable approach. Tragically, while attempting to relocate the aircraft for public exhibition, it sustained irreparable damage. Despite this loss, Ussery’s pioneering endeavor has inspired others to explore alternative housing solutions, demonstrating the potential of repurposing retired aircraft into livable spaces.
