In December 2025, the National Park Service (NPS) revealed a sweeping change to its list of fee-free entry days for 2026. Two of the holidays it dropped are Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth, both previously celebrated with free access to national parks. Instead, the NPS added Donald J. Trump’s birthday June 14, which overlaps with Flag Day as a new fee-free day. This change takes effect on January 1, 2026.

Supporters of the change emphasize that Free Days will still include other major U.S. holidays, such as Presidents Day, Memorial Day, the July 4 Independence Day weekend, Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday, the official anniversary of the Park Service, Constitution Day, and Veterans Day.

Why It Matters — Symbolism and History
Originally, Martin Luther King Jr. Day had been regarded not only as a holiday but also a symbolic day of service — a day for reflection and often community volunteer work in parks, honoring the legacy of the civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.. By removing MLK Day (as well as Juneteenth, which marks emancipation for formerly enslaved people) from the free-admission calendar, critics argue the decision erases important cultural and historical recognition. Replacing these days with a holiday connected to a sitting president injects a personal and political dimension into what many saw as nonpartisan civic remembrance.

Reaction and Criticism
The change has sparked immediate backlash. Civil-rights advocates, conservation groups, and many lawmakers have condemned the decision as insensitive and a step backwards. They argue that the removal sends a message that the nation’s recognition of racial justice and Black history is being downgraded in favor of scheduling aligned with one individual’s birthday. Supporters of the old schedule note that MLK Day had consistently been a popular occasion for park-based volunteer events, public-service projects, and educational activities — often accessible to people who might otherwise be unable to pay entrance fees. Removing it threatens to limit participation in these civic events, especially for lower-income and marginalized communities.

New Fees and Access Changes
The overhaul affects more than just the free-day calendar. Under the new policy, U.S. residents will still have some free days — but non-residents and foreign tourists will face steeper costs. The annual pass remains available for Americans, but newcomers may now encounter surcharges of up to $100 at popular parks, and non-resident passes are set to rise in price. Proponents argue that the adjustments will ensure U.S. taxpayers — who largely fund the park system — retain preferential access, while visitors from abroad help underwrite maintenance, improvements, and visitor services.

What This Signals About the Era
This reorganization of free-entry days marks a broader shift in how national history and public space are being curated in the United States. By prioritizing patriotic holidays and a president’s birthday over civil rights commemorations, the change reflects a redefinition of what moments are considered worthy of public recognition and civic celebration. For many, it underscores the fragility of symbolic recognition — how easily established commemorations can be reshaped with a directive. The new calendar may signal a tilt in federal priorities: from historically rooted social justice observances toward a narrower interpretation of national identity and heritage. As the 2026 schedule takes effect, communities that once converged on MLK Day and Juneteenth for volunteer work, remembrance, and community outreach may have to find new ways to honor those traditions. At the same time, the changes highlight the power of institutional decisions — made quietly, administratively — to reshape collective memory and access.
