In May 2025, the Western Australian government announced a significant initiative to address historical injustices faced by Indigenous Australians. Premier Roger Cook introduced a redress scheme offering payments of up to A$85,000 to survivors of the Stolen Generations—Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals forcibly removed from their families as children under government policies before July 1, 1972.

This move positions Western Australia alongside other Australian states and territories that have implemented similar compensation programs, leaving Queensland as the sole jurisdiction yet to establish such a scheme . The announcement coincided with National Sorry Day, observed annually on May 26, commemorating the 1997 “Bringing Them Home” report, which detailed the traumatic experiences of the Stolen Generations and recommended reparations.

Premier Cook acknowledged the profound impact of these historical policies, stating, “No amount of money could ever make up for the experience of Stolen Generations members and their families, and the ongoing effects on people’s lives” . He emphasized that the redress scheme is a step towards reconciliation and healing, recognizing the harm and trauma caused by the forced removals.

The scheme is expected to open for applications in the second half of 2025, with payments commencing later in the year. Eligible individuals include those who were removed from their families in Western Australia before July 1, 1972. In cases where the survivor has passed away, family members may apply on their behalf.

Survivors and advocates have expressed a mix of relief and cautious optimism. Kath Ryan, a survivor taken from her family at the age of seven, reflected on the announcement, noting the enduring impact of her experiences and the importance of recognition . Noongar Elder Dorothy Bagshaw acknowledged the payment, stating, “Our people will be happy with that because they’re all growing old now and they need to have something to keep them going”.

The redress scheme also includes plans for the government to collaborate with Aboriginal stakeholder organizations to support communications, scheme rollout, and additional measures to assist in healing the trauma experienced by survivors.

This initiative marks a significant step in addressing the historical injustices faced by the Stolen Generations in Western Australia, acknowledging the pain endured and contributing to the broader journey of reconciliation and healing.
