For years, the identity of Banksy has remained one of the biggest mysteries in the art world, with fans constantly trying to figure out who the elusive street artist really is. But after a recent investigation reignited debate over Banksy’s true identity, one man who has repeatedly been mistaken for the graffiti icon has finally had enough  and he is now speaking out in frustration. UNILAD reported on March 19 that George Georgiou, a builder from North London, has once again been caught up in the rumors and decided to publicly shut them down.

The renewed attention came after a recent Reuters investigation said Banksy is likely Robin Gunningham, a name that has long circulated in connection with the artist. That report pointed to old police records, travel information, and other evidence that linked Gunningham to the famous street artist, while also suggesting he may now go by the name David Jones. Even so, the long-running mystery has continued to create confusion, especially for people who happen to resemble photos tied to the speculation.

George Georgiou Says the Rumors Are “Ridiculous”
George Georgiou told the Daily Mail that he is not Banksy and is tired of people treating the theory like a joke. According to UNILAD’s report, Georgiou said: “I’m not Banksy… It’s really annoying, it’s ridiculous and it’s disturbing.” He explained that at first the mistaken identity claims were funny, but over time they became exhausting and started affecting his daily life. He said the constant jokes and messages have become a real nuisance, describing how people keep calling and bringing it up whenever his name resurfaces in connection with the artist. Georgiou added that what may seem harmless to others becomes frustrating when it never stops and interferes with normal life. He also bluntly told people to “grow up” and “get a life,” making it clear he is completely over the speculation.

Why People Thought He Was Banksy
The confusion around Georgiou appears to stem from photos taken in 2024 when he was spotted near one of Banksy’s famous murals in London. At the time, some people online believed he might be the artist because he was seen installing Perspex near the artwork, which led to fresh rumors. But Georgiou said there was a simple explanation: the building where the mural appeared belonged to his two sons, so he had a legitimate reason to be there. That explanation did little to stop the theories, especially because an older image linked to Banksy’s rumored identity was said by some to resemble him. Georgiou even joked about that comparison, saying the only flattering part was that people apparently think he looks much younger than he is. Still, beneath the humor, he made it clear the attention has become deeply irritating.

The Banksy Mystery Is Still Very Much Alive
Despite the recent investigation, Banksy’s true identity still has not been officially confirmed by the artist himself. Reuters reported that Robin Gunningham is the strongest match after years of speculation, but Banksy’s lawyer Mark Stephens pushed back, saying the artist “does not accept that many of the details” in the investigation are correct. Pest Control, the artist’s official authentication body, also reportedly chose not to comment further. For now, that means the mystery remains unresolved — and people like George Georgiou are still being dragged into it whether they like it or not. What started as a fascinating art-world puzzle has become a real headache for one ordinary man who just wants the internet to move on. And until Banksy ever decides to reveal himself, stories like this will likely keep happening.
