Bindi Irwin, the 26-year-old Australian conservationist and television personality, recently underwent emergency surgery in the United States, marking another chapter in her ongoing battle with endometriosis. The incident occurred during a family trip to Las Vegas for the annual Steve Irwin Gala, an event honoring her late father, Steve Irwin.
While preparing for the gala, Bindi experienced severe abdominal pain. Medical evaluation revealed a ruptured appendix, necessitating immediate surgery. During the procedure, doctors also removed 14 endometriosis lesions and repaired a hernia sustained during childbirth four years prior. This was not her first encounter with endometriosis; in 2023, she had undergone surgery to remove 37 lesions and a cyst.
Bindi’s mother, Terri Irwin, accompanied her daughter to New York for treatment at Lenox Hill Hospital, where Dr. Tamer Seckin performed the surgery. Bindi later shared her experience on social media, expressing gratitude for the support received and emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about endometriosis. She stated, “The reason I share my health journey is because more girls and women desperately need answers to their undiagnosed pain”.
Despite the medical emergency, Bindi remained optimistic about her recovery. She posted photos from Central Park, captioned “Healing,” and thanked her family for their unwavering support. Her husband, Chandler Powell, praised her strength, writing, “You are the strongest person I know” . Her brother, Robert Irwin, who hosted the gala in her absence, also expressed his admiration, stating, “You face every hurdle head-on, take it in your stride, and inspire us”.
Bindi’s advocacy for women’s health issues, particularly endometriosis, has been a significant aspect of her public life.
