The European Space Agency (ESA), in collaboration with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), is conducting a groundbreaking study aimed at understanding the effects of microgravity on the human body. To achieve this, ESA is offering volunteers approximately €5,000 to participate in a 10-day bed rest experiment. This study, known as the Vivaldi III campaign, is being carried out at the Medes Space Clinic in Toulouse, France, and focuses on “dry immersion,” a method designed to simulate weightlessness similar to what astronauts experience during spaceflight.

Participants are required to lie down on specially designed waterbeds for 10 consecutive days without standing up. These waterbeds are lined with waterproof fabric, keeping the volunteers dry while suspending them in water. This suspension mimics the feeling of floating, closely resembling the weightless environment aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Volunteers’ torsos are submerged, while their heads and arms remain above water, giving them the sensation of near-weightlessness.

The primary goal of the study is to analyze how the human body reacts to prolonged periods of weightlessness. In space, astronauts face numerous health challenges, such as muscle atrophy, bone density loss, and changes in circulation. The Vivaldi III experiment aims to better understand these physiological changes and to develop countermeasures that will help maintain astronauts’ health on long-duration missions, such as future trips to Mars or extended stays on the ISS.

Despite sounding easy, participants must adhere to strict guidelines. They are not permitted to stand or sit up during the study, even for basic activities like eating or using the restroom. Instead, all activities, including meals, are carried out in a reclined position. Bathroom breaks are managed with the assistance of trained staff, ensuring participants remain in the required position at all times. Meals are served on floating boards, and neck pillows provide support while eating.

Although volunteers are restricted in their movements, they are allowed to use their smartphones and other personal devices to stay connected with family and friends during the study. After the initial 10 days of bed rest, participants undergo an additional five days of monitoring and recovery to assess how their bodies adapt when transitioning back to normal gravity conditions. They also return for follow-up assessments 10 days after the study concludes.

ESA’s team leader for enabling science in human exploration, Ann-Kathrin Vlacil, explains that extending the duration of dry immersion and comparing it with traditional bed rest studies helps refine the understanding of spaceflight’s physiological effects. The parallel running of a head-down tilt bed rest study with 10 male participants provides further insight into how different simulations of microgravity impact the body.
Recruitment for the Vivaldi III study was rigorous. Only healthy males between the ages of 20 and 40, with a height between 1.65 meters and 1.80 meters, and a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 20 and 26, were eligible to apply. Participants were also required to have no allergies or dietary restrictions that could interfere with the study protocols.

This research is crucial for ESA’s future human space exploration missions. By understanding how microgravity affects the body and testing various countermeasures, scientists aim to ensure astronauts remain healthy and capable during and after their missions in space.
