A growing Ebola outbreak in Central and East Africa has raised international concern after officials confirmed more than 130 deaths linked to the virus. The current outbreak, centered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda, has been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to health officials, the outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which currently has no approved vaccine or specific treatment. WHO officials warned that the virus may be spreading faster than initially believed, especially in conflict-affected regions where medical resources are limited.

What Is Ebola?
Ebola is a severe and often deadly viral disease that affects humans and some animals. The illness was first identified in 1976 and has caused multiple outbreaks in Africa over the decades. Fatality rates vary depending on the strain and medical care available, but some outbreaks have killed up to 90 percent of infected patients. The current outbreak has already resulted in at least 131 deaths and hundreds of suspected infections, with experts warning the real number could be even higher because many cases may still be undetected.

Common Symptoms of Ebola
Symptoms of Ebola can appear anywhere from two days to three weeks after exposure to the virus. Early symptoms often resemble the flu, which can make detection difficult in the beginning. Common warning signs include:

High fever
Severe fatigue
Headaches
Muscle pain
Sore throat
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Abdominal pain

As the disease progresses, some patients may develop internal or external bleeding, including bleeding from the nose, gums, eyes, or digestive tract. Severe dehydration, organ failure, and shock are also possible complications.

How Ebola Spreads
Health experts stress that Ebola is not airborne like the flu or COVID-19. Instead, it spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids from an infected person. This includes blood, saliva, sweat, vomit, urine, breast milk, or semen. Contaminated clothing, bedding, needles, and medical equipment can also spread the virus. People can also become infected through contact with the bodies of victims who have died from Ebola, which is why traditional burial practices sometimes contribute to outbreaks. Officials investigating the current epidemic believe at least one funeral may have accelerated transmission.

Why Officials Are Concerned
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the “scale and speed” of the outbreak are deeply concerning. Cases have already appeared in urban areas and among healthcare workers, increasing fears of wider international spread. The outbreak is especially difficult to contain because the affected regions face armed conflict, large population movements, and weak healthcare infrastructure. Medical teams are currently expanding testing, treatment centers, and contact tracing efforts in an attempt to slow transmission. Health agencies including the WHO and CDC continue monitoring the situation closely while urging travelers and healthcare workers to remain alert for symptoms.

Can Ebola Be Treated?
Although there is currently no universal cure for Ebola, early medical care greatly improves a patient’s chances of survival. Treatment mainly focuses on supporting the body while it fights the infection. Patients are often given intravenous fluids, oxygen, medications to control fever and pain, and treatment for secondary infections. In recent years, scientists have developed experimental therapies and antibody-based treatments that have shown promising results against certain strains of Ebola. However, experts say the Bundibugyo strain involved in the current outbreak remains more difficult to treat because approved vaccines and therapies were designed primarily for the Zaire strain.
