The family of late actor Eric Dane is still struggling to come to terms with his death, according to his former wife Rebecca Gayheart. In a recent interview, Gayheart revealed that she and their daughters are “still in a state of shock” nearly a month after the actor passed away at the age of 53.
Dane, known for his roles in popular television shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, died on February 19, 2026, following complications related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurological disease he publicly revealed in 2025.
A Difficult Loss for the Family
Gayheart explained that the past few weeks have been extremely emotional for her and the couple’s two daughters, Billie, 16, and Georgia, 14. Although Gayheart and Dane had been separated for several years, they remained closely connected as a family and worked together to support their children. She said the loss has been overwhelming and that the family is still trying to process what happened. According to Gayheart, the kindness and support from friends, colleagues, and the entertainment community have helped them during this painful period. The actress also shared that she sometimes feels overwhelmed by the amount of love and support coming from people around the world who admired Dane and his work.

Standing Together Through Illness
Despite filing for divorce in 2018 after more than a decade of marriage, Gayheart remained involved in Dane’s life as he battled ALS. In fact, she withdrew the divorce petition in 2025 after his diagnosis so they could focus on supporting their family during his illness. During the final months of his life, Dane faced increasing health challenges as the disease progressed. ALS gradually affects nerve cells that control muscle movement, eventually making it difficult for patients to speak, move, and breathe. Even with the severity of the condition, Dane continued to stay connected with his loved ones and remained determined to raise awareness about the disease.
Emotional Final Moments
One particularly emotional moment for the family came when Dane participated in a voice-restoration project using artificial intelligence technology. The technology recreated his voice using recordings from earlier in his life, allowing him to communicate more easily as the illness affected his speech. When Dane heard the recreated version of his voice for the first time, Gayheart recalled that it was an incredibly moving moment for everyone present. She said the experience brought the family to tears and allowed them to preserve something deeply meaningful for their daughters.
Remembering His Legacy
Dane built a long and successful career in Hollywood, appearing in numerous television series and films over several decades. He became widely recognized for playing Dr. Mark Sloan, nicknamed “McSteamy,” in the medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, and later portrayed Cal Jacobs in the HBO series Euphoria. Friends and colleagues across the entertainment industry have shared tributes praising his talent, humor, and dedication to his family. Many have also highlighted his courage in speaking openly about ALS and encouraging awareness and research for the disease.

Moving Forward After the Loss
For Gayheart and their daughters, the grieving process is still ongoing. She emphasized that healing will take time, but she is grateful for the strong support system surrounding their family. Although the shock of Dane’s passing remains, Gayheart said she is focused on honoring his memory and continuing the work he cared about, especially efforts to support people living with ALS. For now, the family is taking things one day at a time as they navigate life without the beloved actor who meant so much to them and to fans around the world.
